Just a couple quick thoughts before we grab breakfast and then the train to the start for Stage 2 . . .
- People will be sore today, and it will be interesting to see how they recovered overnight. The steep downhills from Stage 1 will be recalled by every racers' legs this morning, and we'll see if race leader, Chris Schneider, can go out at his breakneck pace again today. The same goes for every team, truthfully. Racers have minor ailments, such as Sean from the Untamed Adventure Virginia team who will be taping up his ankle and Deb from ARMD who, last I knew, was going to use duct-tape to make a splint for her dislocated thumb.
- If you wanted to approximate Untamed Switzerland Stage 2 at home, and didn't have the mountains to make it happen, you could do the following:
- Load your backpack with 10 pounds of equipment or more
- Put your treadmill on the highest incline and start going for 2 hours
- After 2 hours, racers will hit sloppy, wet snow and this is hard to simulate in a gym -- maybe have somebody start wiggling the treadmill to destabilize you?
- After 1 hour of the wiggling treadmill action, put a set of encyclopedias under the front of the treadmill to bump it up to excruciating levels. If you can barely stand on the treadmill when it isn't moving, because of the incline, then you've got it. Go at this for 1 hour if you can.
The action isn't over after 4 hours, however, as you still have to get down from the summit. For racers today, it will be a fun and more gradual downhill to the seaside down of Hergiswil on Lake Luzern.
Now, I'm off to see if the hotel was able to whip up some early breakfast for us. Everyone needs as many calories as they can handle this morning! By the way, we've updated the route overlay on the race map (at www.UntamedAdventure.com/Switzerland) and have everything set to go for stage 2. The fun should start in a couple hours . . .
