Spring Racing in the Alps

Untamed Adventure Racing Blog

Just a bit over a week until Untamed Switzerland gets underway.  The snow is melting in the low valleys, but up high there's still plenty of cold stuff to go around.  It's impossible to predict whether our 3 days of racing in April will be more like Spring, or more like Winter, but that's part of the fun.  I think we can count on snowshoes being useful in all 3 stages, however, and I look for racers to find that wet slushy snow/mud mix on a lot of the mountains (mud down low, snow/slush up high).

While there is slush and mud on the ground, racers may not notice because they'll be captivated by the scenery; it can be fabulous at this time of year:

This pic actually shows one valley from our 2010 [still unannounced!] course.

We're keeping a constant eye on the avalanche situation, too, as you can never be too careful.  We have a few areas marked off-limits on our Untamed Switzerland race maps -- mostly just as precautions and not out of a true "high avalanche" risk -- but the fact is the weather forecast looks terrific moving into next week and we're setting the stage for 2010 to be the most dramatic Untamed Switzerland yet!
