One More Orienteering Convert!

Untamed Adventure Racing Blog

I attended another Zurich-area orienteering meet this past weekend, and coerced my buddy Mark to come out and give it a try. He had never done an o-meet before, so it was a totally new world for him. He's done a ton of trail running, though, so I knew he'd catch on quick. We ended up running the "Open Long" course together, to make sure he didn't get in over his head.

Here is the map of our course (and our route is in blue marker -- tough to see but it's on there if you download the bigger image):

In a funny twist, this course overlapped with some of the forest trails Mark and I had run just a few weekends prior, so we unintentionally had some familiarity with the terrain. It didn't really help us, however, and I would still like to change some of our route choices (between controls 11 and 12 particularly, that was 12 minutes!). Still, we had a great time and I think Mark is officially "into" orienteering a bit -- one more convert!

Finally, just because it's Fall here now and the November "grays" will set in over Zurich, I'll share my last bright photo of the summer from one hiking trip back in September:

It will be several weeks before the sun emerges from the clouds again, and by then we'll have snow to deal with and that means time to break out the nordic skis and snowshoes!  I have no complaints, as we had great weather through the summer and I'm psyched for these winter months.
