Adventure Racing Holiday Gifts: Day 7

Untamed Adventure Racing Blog

I'll start with a summary of what I've covered already:

  1. Day 1 was a couple options for inspirtational coffee table / photo books.
  2. Day 2 was a waterproof backpack cover.
  3. Day 3 was a pair of shoes perfect for orienteering and/or icy terrain.
  4. Day 4 was a computerized water bottle that tracks your consumption, and keeps you inline with hydration targets.
  5. Day 5 was a pair of Axis Gear adventure racing pants
  6. Day 6 was a water filter attachment system for your hydration bladder, so you can leave your water pump at home in the next race.

For number 7, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest something a bit more effeminate than you might expect.  My 7th idea is the automatic callous removing device called the "Heel Smoother Pro", a device targeted to women but applicable to anyone who puts lots of miles on their feet.

One secret to keeping your feet healthy in a long race is eliminating any callouses before you go into the event.  Callouses are a major source of problems for blisters, hot spots, and general foot discomfort after you mix in several days of stress in an adventure race.  Through the year, I'm careful to file away callouses using a callous file (at least that's what I think it is called) from the local drugstore; my wife loves the tiny flakes of dead skin my filing leaves around the bathroom.  This battery powered Heel Smoother Pro looks like it does the job more quickly, reliably, and safely.

According to the promotion on the Heel Smoother site, you can also get a jar of "topaz foot butter" with your purchase -- gotta love that!

Stop laughing -- I'm serious about this being a useful gift for an endurance athlete.  In case you doubt me, check out the Foot Doctor's review of this product and his thoughts on the topic of callouses.  He comes at it from the perspective of ultrarunning and long distance events, so it's good advice.  To sum up: callouses = bad.  This little appliance will bust those callouses, and your feet will be so much better off because of it.

I think any adventurer, once they got past the "pedicure" branding of the product, would appreciate such a gift.  And don't forget that jar of topaz butter, either!
