Adventure Racing Holiday Gifts: Day 1

Untamed Adventure Racing Blog

Posted by Grant on 1. December 2009 20:00

Now that it's December, it's time for me to revisit a holiday tradition from last year that I have some fun with.  It's time for the 12-days of Christmas adventure racing style!  I'm going to post a creative holiday gift suggestion every day, for the next 12 days, and I'm sure any adventurous soul would enjoy at least some of these items.  I know I would enjoy all of them!

We changed blog hosting servers in January 2009, so the 2008 edition of these 12-days of AR Holiday gifts have been lost for all eternity (or more likely I'm too lazy to track down and restore the missing content -- this isn't the Bill of Rights I'm writing here or anything...); I don't think I'm overlapping with any gift ideas from the previous year, but I can't really be sure so apologies if you've seen some of these from me before.

Without further ado, then, let me fire up adventure racing holiday gift idea #1 . . .

How about an inspirational book showcasing some of the most amazing adventure race photography from around the world?  I showcased a different book last year, but this year let me put the focus on the book entitled "Endless" from Scandinavian photographer Peder Sunstöm.

I don't own a copy myself, but I have seen some of these pictures around the internet (on websites for team sponsors for example); I sure would enjoy flipping through these pages to get fired up for the coming 2010 year.  I'm a sucker for photos combining landscapes and action, and if you sprinkle a team of adventure racers into the picture somewhere I'm totally sold.

It can be tough finding unique gifts for adventure racers, and it's risky to buy them gear when they are probably very very particular.  So a high-impact photo book like this is a great way to acknowledge their passion, but not risk buying them the Model XYZ of some equipment when they'd really prefer the Model ABC.

Of course, I should also mention the Untamed New England 2009 coffee table book (by North America's own professional adventure photographer Luis Moreira).  Luis captures the unforgettable whitewater (Class II+, we like to call it), scenic mountain ranges, and dense forest that make New England an amazing location to race in.  If you've raced in Untamed New England, or are just looking for high energy photography from one of the best, you can't go wrong with the New England book either.

The Untamed New England coffee table book, pictured above, is $50 US + shipping; the Endless book, pictured to the right, is $65 US including shipping.  Either one of these books . . . or both . . . would make any adventure racer smile after they unwrap it, and inspire them to do great things in the year to come.

To recap, then, gift 1 is really two suggestions: there is the Endless book with an emphasis on photos from races around the world; there is also the Untamed New England photo book featuring the 2009 race in New Hampshire, Maine, and just a smidgen of Vermont.
