We put together a visual aid showing the 2009 Untamed New England race course:
We're working on the format using the 2009 race as our model -- teams in the 2010 race will get something like this a few days prior to the race this coming August.
The idea is that we want teams to be able to pack their gear bins and prepare equipment before they get the exact race instructions. This will save a ton of time on race morning, let teams focus just on the details of their maps and the race booklet, and make life easier for just about everyone.
One key to this diagram is that it shouldn't divulge where the race goes, but still inform teams about when to see the transition areas etc. We might add a rough estimate of distances involved, too. One additional item to note: this diagram doesn't attempt to be a map nor show a compass rose -- the top of the diagram doesn't claim to represent North, so don't make the mistake of thinking this is somehow an overlay you could put on a real map. For example, the climb site in reality was the furthest East point of the race -- way over in Maine's Mahoosuc Mountains -- but the diagram shows it right in the middle.
We're still ironing out details, so please weigh in if you have an opinion!
