One Day Orienteering Challenge

As a "warm up" for our premiere Swiss event, the 3-Day Alpine Stage Race in April, we offered a smaller scale one day event south of Zurich at the Spiffing Ales brewery. 12 brave participants took on the 35 kilometers of course and 1000 m of elevation gain; they would visit as many points as possible in the 5 hours, and the sun and snow kept them company all along the way. The post-event beer and food from the brewery were a great way to wrap-up the day.

Here are the results:
Participant Total Points Time on Course Points Per Hour (Avg)
P. "South African Gazelle" Willcock 20 4:20 4.61
V. "Forza Suisse" Mumprecht (team) 14 3:57 3.54
Dynamo ETHZ: UP (team) 10 4:53 2.05
G. "Dr. Dash" Klisch 9 3:59 2.26
R. "Why Leave A Perfectly Good Brewery?" Hay 9 4:41 1.92
J. "Hunde Champion" Peloquin (team) 4 4:17 0.93
A. "The Shadow" Virtualle 4 4:47 0.84

We will share photos as soon as they're available, and we're happy to post the base topographic maps used for the course. All participants were provided with this topographic map as well as two orienteering maps: We can also share the elevation profile of the full 35 kilometer course (1300+ meters of climb).

We would post electronic versions of the orienteering maps we used, but the Clubs who provided them would not appreciate that; so the topo map is all we can share here.

Thanks again to everyone and to the generous support of Spiffing Ales for hosting our March warm-up! We also enjoy support from our official partners MacPac, Teko, Aku, Marmot, and Aarn!

We might host another event like this in the Fall -- we'll have to see how our Fall schedule shapes up.
