I probably don't have to sing the praises of merino wool to you. Most should know by now, merino wool
has a great combination of comfort, warmth, durability, and remains odor-free for long stretches.
We anticipate many "long stretches" and the need for warmth etc are paramount for this Patagonia race.
My base layer of choice is a variety of Icebreaker tops -- some short and some long sleeve depending
on the conditions -- but I will depend on them to help me stay comfortable and dry during the race.
A buddy of mine from New Zealand can't stop talking about Icebreaker and the high quality of their
products; he also touts their environmental responsibility. I'm not naming any names, but there are other
"wool" companies out there that don't deliver the highest quality of merino and you can tell as it
deteriorates over time. I've owned the same Icebreaker base layer (short sleeve) for 3+ years now, and it will
make the trip to Patagonia with me; I've had another long sleeve version for 2+ years and it will
be making the trip with me too. My point is: their stuff might be pricey, but it's worth it to know
you can still be racing with it years down the road.

The Icebreaker website has their whole
