The Environment and Untamed Adventure Racing

Untamed Adventure Racing and the Environment
Untamed Adventure races combine the natural beauty and challenge of rugged terrain, along with responsibility and stewardship. All our courses are carefully reviewed for environmental impact. Our events adhere to the principles of leave no trace outdoor ethics.Every race includes "work projects" where racers must complete a conservation project during the course of the race; this can take the form of planting trees, removing invasive species, or whatever is determined appropriate for the race venue in concert with land managers and local environmental groups. It's amazing what can be accomplished through our collective efforts!

Untamed New England is proud to be carbon neutral (through carbon credit programs), adhere to sustainable course designs, and include conservation projects in the course -- participants help their community in a very real and hands on way!

Check out this video from a conservation project in the 2008 Untamed New England Adventure Race; teams helped the Forest Society to organize their sustainable fuel (timber) for the next winter by doing some manual labor for a great cause:

Here are some of the other things we've included in past races:
  • During a trekking leg, adventure race teams marked 7 miles of trails with tree-friendly signage
  • During a paddling leg, adventure race teams removed heavy rubber tires from a river and paddled them to our pre-arranged tire-drop depot
  • Teams organized thousands of pounds of timber for use by the Forest Society's sustainable wood-burning stove system
  • During a biking leg, adventure race teams cleared deadfall and brush from overgrown trails
We've done many other creative green projects as part of our races . . . trash pick-up, invasive species removal, bird habitat recovery, and more.

We absolutely walk the walk on environmental responsibility!

Our philosophy is that the sport of adventure racing shoulders a responsibility to continuously raise the bar of environmental conduct; our office is the natural lands all around us and we strive to be an example for all to follow.
