Unsponsored - Unsupported - Unrelenting
The CRUX is a Winter 50 km run through the Züri Oberland; named for Count Rudolph (the CRUX stands
for "Count Rudolph Ultra eXtreme") who constructed Rapperswil castle in the 13th century, the CRUX
traces Count Rudolph's wild route from Winterthur to Rapperswil via the mountains, valleys, and forests
of the Züri Oberland in between (course map is at the bottom of this page). Read more about Count Rudolph's legendary route here →.
Through snow, ice, and whatever else the Swiss winter throws at us . . . the CRUX will be a 50 km test
to remember!
CRUX Facts
- Race Date: Saturday 28 January, 2012. Race starts in the morning, and concludes by around sunset.
- Race Location: This is a linear course, starting near Winterthur (a location easily accessed by train)
and concluding near Rapperswil. Precise course map is at the bottom of this page.
- Race Format: This is, in essence, a bunch of people
running a long way independently -- there are no organized aid stations or course marshalls to direct you.
You should bring your food and plan for hydration along the way.
We
will provide a good colour map of the course (it follows the well-marked Oberland Hohenweg trail) to all who
show up to the starting line, and will mark the map with sources of water etc, but after that you're
on your own!
Furthermore, our course will identify numerous bailout options so
if you want to make this a 20 km or 40 km run instead, that can be easily accomplished. But make no mistake
about it: this race is a "guerilla ultra" where there's no race t-shirt, no real organization, and
no formalities. I would bring a compass, as I think everyone at the 2011 edition needed to check their directions a couple of different times.
- Race Fee: No cost for the CRUX (see above "Race Format" for some explanation)
- Register: ALthough the price is free, we do need CRUX runners to register their intent with us
so we can communicate final details and print maps for you, etc. Email Peter at ackermann.p [at] bluewin.ch
to let us know you're interested in the CRUX, and we'll keep you in the loop.
Detailed GPX file download available upon request. Here is a map of the route; it follows
the marked "Oberland Hohenweg" trail:
